Quackery worsens in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar, residents demand action

KARACHI: Quackery has reached alarming levels in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar, raising serious concerns about public health and regulatory oversight. Residents say that several illegal clinics and self-styled doctors continue to operate in the area despite repeated raids by the Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC), putting countless lives at risk.

According to details, in Block 11 of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, a number of individuals are allegedly running illegal medical practices, including Mohsin Bilal, Ashok, Bilawal, Rashid, and Dr. Rajput. In addition, unlicensed facilities such as Aqsa Clinic, Mahnoor Clinic, and Ayan Clinic are reportedly providing substandard and unsafe treatments.

Local residents claim that these clinics operate day and night, often leaving patients in critical condition due to unqualified and dangerous procedures. “Dozens of families have already been devastated by these fake doctors, yet no lasting action has been taken,” one resident complained.

Ineffective regulatory response

Sources revealed that SHCC teams have conducted multiple raids and sealed several of these illegal clinics. However, the facilities reportedly reopen shortly afterward, with little to no deterrence. This has led to mounting criticism that SHCC’s efforts are proving ineffective in curbing quackery.

Public outcry for decisive action

Frustrated residents have appealed to the Chief Minister of Sindh, the provincial Health Minister, and other authorities to take urgent action. Their demands include:

• Permanent closure of illegal clinics
• Arrest and punishment of self-styled doctors
• Strong regulatory enforcement to prevent reopening

Health experts warn that unchecked quackery not only endangers lives but also undermines trust in the healthcare system. The growing problem highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between government, regulatory bodies, and law enforcement agencies.
