KARACHI: Recognising the importance of oral health for maintaining overall health, especially for children with special healthcare needs, Baqai Dental College’s (BDC) community dentistry department recently held a screening camp at the Quaid-e-Azam Rangers School (Special children), Super Highway, Karachi.
Head of Department (HoD) Prof Dr Asghar Ali Shigri, along with assistant professors Dr Samreen Mazher, Dr Mahwish Bano, Dr Wajiha Anzar, and house officers conducted the screening camp aimed at identifying oral health needs of children with disabilities.
The school’s principal and vice principal welcomed the BDC faculty members and house officers for setting up the camp for children.
Around 80 children enrolled at the school have conditions including autism, ADHD, learning problems, intellectual issues, blindness and deafness.
At the camp children’s trainers and caregivers were provided awareness about oral health, oral hygiene measures and effective tooth brushing techniques. The instructors were also guided with regard to special needs of the children regarding oral hygiene.
During the individual oral examination by house officers, the children were found having conditions like dental caries, bruxism, dental trauma, other oral anomalies, malocclusion and delayed eruption.
