KARACHI: In a heartening display of community-centered healthcare, Dow Dental College has taken a major step forward in promoting inclusive dental services by offering specialized care to over 50 children with cerebral palsy and other special needs. This initiative was carried out at the Institute of Holistic Rehabilitation and Inclusion (IHRI) under the compassionate guidance of Dr. Tahir Shoaib, head of the department of paediatric dentistry.
Bringing smiles to children with special needs
Many children with cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities face major barriers to receiving basic dental care. At Dow Dental College, the dental team went beyond the clinic to serve these young patients directly in a comfortable, rehabilitation-focused environment. The treatments were personalized to cater to each child’s physical, cognitive, and emotional needs—ensuring safe and dignified care.
The collaboration with IHRI is not only a service activity but also a statement of inclusion—affirming that quality oral health is a right for all, regardless of ability.
A message of gratitude and the power of inclusion
Following this meaningful outreach, the college received a heartfelt message of appreciation from IHRI, applauding the team’s empathetic and professional approach. The acknowledgment has deeply inspired Dow’s dental community and strengthened its commitment to health equity and outreach.
Dr. Shoaib emphasized that this is not a one-time act but a model for sustained engagement.
“Serving these courageous young individuals is both an honor and a responsibility. We look forward to building long-term programs that empower families and promote equity,” he said.
Supporting the SDGs through local action
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 3 – Good health and well-being
- SDG 10 – Reduced inequalities
By offering hands-on care to a marginalized group often overlooked by mainstream health systems, Dow Dental College exemplifies how academic institutions can become drivers of human-first public health innovation.
Dow Dental College encourages other healthcare institutions to join hands in prioritizing inclusion, removing barriers, and creating dignified care environments for all. Real impact begins when compassion meets action.
