FJDC, PAD launch country’s first dental sign language book

KARACHI: To help people with impaired hearing in overcoming barriers they face in accessing healthcare services in the country, particularly in the dental field, Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC), in collaboration with the Pakistan Association of Deaf (PAD), has introduced a dental-specific sign language book.

Titled "Pakistan Sign Language for Dentistry", the book is a valuable resource to enhance the oral healthcare of deaf persons by bridging the communication gap between healthcare professionals and patients.

FJDC has formally started training its fourth-year BDS students in Pakistan Sign Language (PSL) for Dentistry, making it the first initiative of its kind in the country’s dental education history.

Dr. Hareem Sohail, a dedicated professional, has been entrusted with the responsibility of teaching PSL to the students.

Dr. Hussain Askary, CEO and Head of Community Dentistry at FJDC, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "We recognize the significant challenges faced by the deaf community in accessing healthcare services. By introducing PSL training for our students, we aim to create a more inclusive and accessible dental care environment."

The program's primary objective is to equip future dentists with the skills necessary to communicate effectively with deaf patients, ensuring they receive the best possible care.

The training includes a comprehensive curriculum covering basic sign language, dental terminology, and communication techniques.

This initiative sets a precedent for dental education in Pakistan, promoting inclusivity and diversity in the healthcare sector.

The program is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of individuals with auditory disabilities, ensuring they receive quality dental care with dignity and respect.
