KARACHI: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) Department of Community & Preventive Dentistry students collaborated with Shield Pakistan to organize an oral health awareness and free dental check-up programme at Jinnah Foundation School.
The event’s aim was to impart knowledge to students on the significance of oral health and elevate their dental well-being.
Dr Hussain Askary, CEO and Head of the Department of Community Dentistry-FJDC, was the moving spirit behind the event focusing on oral health promotion among the underprivileged children.
Dr Askary spoke about his endeavours for dental health awareness among school children during his early career, which served as a catalyst for him to aspire leadership roles in dental public health, both within Pakistan and abroad, including the UK and Canada.
He extensively worked as a consultant for various organisations, including NGOs in the United States, as well as global entities like the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO. His expertise extends to pioneering projects such as "Health Promoting Schools" and his leadership in the development of "Sign Language for Dentistry," a groundbreaking initiative aimed at making dental health resources accessible to the hearing-impaired community.
Over a thousand students from Jinnah Foundation School participated in this programme. The dental check-up encompassed a comprehensive assessment of oral health, including evaluations of dental hygiene, cavity detection, and identification of any oral health concerns.
Following the check-up, each student was provided one-on-one counseling, discussing their oral health status. The event motivated the students to assume responsibility for their dental health and cultivate healthy habits.
